Baby Boomer Job Search 7 Tips

Baby Boomers Careers: 7 Ways to Stand Out

In researching the Baby Boomer period (1946-1964), it turns out that I’m one. I retired early, got bored, became a certified career coach, and started my career coaching business for tech executives.

LinkedIn reached out to me this week to offer my perspective on how Baby Boomers could stand out in the application process.

My clients who are Boomers stand out in the application process with the following tactics.

  1. Professional Branding: Seek out professional branding expertise such as Jobscan.co or LinkedIn Services marketplace.
  2. Elevator Speech Practice: Create a succinct elevator speech and practicing it with Yoodli.ai
  3. Resume Optimization: Update your resume to reflect on the past 10-15 years mapped to a specific job posting.
  4. LinkedIn Makeover: Optimize your LinkedIn profile thinking like a recruiter or hiring manager with industry-recognized headline job title, technical and leadership skills, metrics, and colleague recommendations.
  5. Associations: If you’ve retired and are coming back to the workforce, consider joining associations such as WomenTech Network.
  6. Meet & Greet: It’s time to network with former colleagues and friends with the “why” a company would find them invaluable.
  7. Company Intelligence: Research your targeted company and hiring decision makers to create a customized cover letter.

For your own mental health, I believe strongly in finding emotional outlets such as hobbies to balance out the drudgery of a job search.

Finding a job at any age is a challenge. Great news is you will persevere!
